The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration opened its 33 public parks for people to celebrate the Loy Krathong festival until midnight tonight.
It will also deploy hundreds of workers to collect Krathong floats from 8pm to 5am tomorrow. The collection will also take place in a 15-kilometer-long section of the Chao Phraya River from Rama VIII Bridge to Rama IX Bridge and also in local canals.
Collected floats will be disposed of at On Nut, Nong Khaem and Sai Mai garbage stations. The floats that were made from natural materials will be transformed into compost at the BMA’s compost plant in Nong Khaem district. This will recycle floats and reduce landfill costs.
In 2021 BMA workers gathered 403,235 floats. Of them, 96.46% were made from natural materials. The BMA has campaigned for the use of natural materials including banana leaves and trunks, cassava and bagasse to conserve the environment. (TNA)
