BANGKOK, Thailand –Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and TikTok have joined forces to expand the #BKKFoodBank project, aiming to reduce food waste and provide essential supplies to vulnerable communities, Dec 13.
In the past two years, the initiative has successfully reduced carbon dioxide emissions by over 2 million kilograms and established Food Banks in all 50 districts.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt stated that the BKK Food Bank, launched in 2022, aims to address inequality, ensure food security, and foster a sustainable society. The partnership with TikTok has significantly boosted the project’s reach, leveraging the platform’s vast user base and engaging content format.
The BKK Food Bank addresses the pressing issue of food waste, which accounts for 50% of all waste in Bangkok and incurs annual management costs of over 7.3 billion baht.
By effectively managing food waste, the project contributes to environmental sustainability. Since February last year, the project has distributed over 3.3 million meals to 110,000 vulnerable individuals and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by over 2 million kilograms of carbon dioxide.
The collaboration with TikTok has been particularly impactful, with the project gaining significant traction in the past two months. Over 1.1 million meals have been distributed, and carbon emissions have been reduced by more than 690,000 kilograms.
Chanida Klaiphan, Head of Public Policy – Thailand, TikTok, highlighted the company’s commitment to creating positive social impact. Through collaborations with top creators, TikTok has raised awareness about sustainable food management and encouraged the community to participate in the initiative.
The BKK Food Bank accepts donations of excess food and essential supplies. Currently, 665 convenience stores are participating in the initiative. Donated items are sorted and stored according to hygiene standards. Collected items are distributed to individuals in need through BKK Food Bank centers located in various districts across Bangkok.
