BANGKOK, Thailand – After lightning struck a large rain tree near the water feature in Benjakitti Park, leaving a triangular burn mark on its trunk, Bangkok’s “Tree Doctor” team quickly responded. Following the principles of arboriculture, they began restorative surgery to save the tree, which involved removing damaged bark, treating burn and decay areas, and applying antifungal treatments to prevent further spread.

Next steps include trimming the tree’s canopy to reduce water loss, pruning dry or broken branches, and lifting the crown. The team will also monitor the tree’s structural integrity, particularly the area around the burn mark, especially during storms. If the tree shows signs of instability, additional measures will be taken to reinforce it.

Watering and mulching around the root zone will help retain moisture during the recovery process, while regular checks for pests and diseases will ensure the tree stays healthy. The tree will also receive restorative treatments every 1-2 weeks during the initial recovery phase.

Since trees affected by lightning strikes often show symptoms gradually, the team will closely monitor the rain tree for 1-3 months and continue long-term observation for up to 1.5 years.

To ensure public safety and protect the tree’s root system, the area around the rain tree near the water feature will remain closed to the public during this period of recovery, with signage in place to prevent foot traffic near the root zone.
