BANGKOK, Thailand – Governor Chadchart Sittipunt presided over the official handover ceremony of an HDPE garbage collection boat equipped with a conveyor belt at Prem Prachakon Canal in Chatuchak District, 19 November. The initiative is collaboration between the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and Precious Shipping Public Company Limited, aimed at improving waste management in the city’s waterways.
The governor revealed that the concept for the innovative garbage boat was inspired by similar projects in the Netherlands. Bangkok’s canals, such as Prem Prachakon Canal (which collects 3 tons of waste daily) and Ladprao Canal (with 5 tons daily), currently rely on manual waste collection by six workers per boat. The new HDPE boat, made from durable and recyclable polyethylene material, is designed to enhance efficiency while being environmentally friendly.
“This boat is a prototype. While it effectively uses eco-friendly materials, the conveyor belt system for collecting waste will need further refinement,” Governor Chadchart said. “Once fully operational, this innovation could significantly reduce manpower and prevent waste from flowing into the Chao Phraya River, the sea, and oceans.”
The boat features several advantages, including resistance to impact, sunlight, barnacles, and algae. It weighs less and has a recyclable design, making it ideal for sustainable use. Measuring 5.65 meters in length and 3.5 meters in width, the boat can carry up to 300 kilograms of waste per trip.
Future Plans and Community Engagement
The governor emphasized plans to expand the use of HDPE garbage boats to canals citywide, such as Saen Saeb Canal, Klong Ong Ang, and Klong Bang Lamphu. He also proposed a “Best Canal Community Award” to encourage public participation in canal preservation and reduce waste at its source.
The boat was donated under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the BMA and Precious Shipping Public Company Limited. Manufactured by Asian Marine Services Public Company Limited, it represents a shared commitment to reducing waterway pollution and promoting sustainable waste management practices.

“With this initiative, we’re addressing the root cause of water pollution while creating a cleaner, greener city. The support and cooperation of Bangkok’s residents will be key to achieving this goal,” Governor Chadchart stated.
This collaboration marks a significant step toward environmental sustainability and a brighter future for Bangkok’s waterways.
