Bangkok’s air quality starts the month of love with an orange alert as PM 2.5 levels hit 60.2 µg/m³, signaling a health impact. Authorities urge the public, especially vulnerable groups, to take precautions and limit outdoor activities.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Bangkok Air Quality Data Center reported that, on February 1, the air quality in the city has reached an orange level, indicating potential health effects due to high levels of particulate matter (PM 2.5). The average concentration of PM 2.5 in the city was recorded at 60.2 µg/m³, with air quality in 69 areas exceeding the standard limit.

The air quality has shown a tendency to worsen, with PM 2.5 levels expected to fluctuate between increases and decreases in the coming days. From February 1 to 9, the air ventilation conditions are classified as “weak,” and the occurrence of surface inversion is limiting the dispersion of pollutants, contributing to the persistence of high dust concentrations.

In response to the air quality concerns, health officials have recommended that the general public wear protective face masks when going outside and limit strenuous outdoor activities. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions, should avoid outdoor exertion and follow medical advice if symptoms such as coughing or difficulty breathing occur.

Meteorologists also predict cooler weather with morning fog, while temperatures are expected to rise by 1-2°C throughout the day.

Authorities have confirmed no unusual heat spots were detected by satellites, and there is no significant source of abnormal heat in Bangkok.

For real-time air quality information, residents can check through the AirBKK app, the official website (www.airbkk.com), and several social media channels such as Facebook pages related to the Bangkok Environment Office and Air Quality Management. Additionally, reports of pollution sources can be submitted via Traffy Fondue.
