Preserving Cultural Heritage at Bun Bang Fai in Kalasin



A remarkable example of this time-honored tradition can be witnessed at the annual Bun Bang Fai Tai Lai festival held in Ban Kud Wa, Kuchinarai District, Kalasin Province. This year’s festival, held in 2024, showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Tai people, highlighting their unique craftsmanship and deep connection to their ancestral practices.

The creation of Bun Bang Fai rockets is a testament to the villagers’ expertise and dedication to preserving their traditions. The main ingredient is saltpeter, mixed into gunpowder and packed into iron tubes ranging from 3 meters to 8 meters in length. The larger the rocket, the more gunpowder is required, ensuring a spectacular display when launched.



These have now become a signature OTOP local product that people in other areas order for various festivals.

Safety Measures Ensure a Thrilling Spectacle

Safety is paramount during the Bun Bang Fai Festival. Designated launch sites are carefully selected to ensure a safe distance for spectators, and bunkers are provided to shelter those involved in the firing process.

This lively event is deeply rooted in local beliefs and traditions, with the central focus being on launching homemade rockets towards the heavens to appease the rain gods and ensure bountiful rice harvests.

A Festival of Unity and Economic Boost
The Bun Bang Fai Tai Lai festival in Ban Kud Wa is not only a celebration of tradition but also a significant economic driver. This year’s event attracted over 100,000 visitors, generating revenue exceeding 10 million baht for the province.

The Kud Wa mayor stated this year’s festival featured a spectacular parade showcasing the community’s identity, without alcohol or gambling. About 70 homemade rockets were also launched. The Bun Bang Fai Festival has gained international recognition, attracting visitors from around the globe eager to immerse themselves in this unique cultural experience.




One such visitor expressed their admiration for the festival, emphasizing the importance of preserving these traditions and the role they play in fostering community unity. They extended an invitation to fellow travelers to witness this extraordinary event firsthand, highlighting its once-a-year occurrence.

The Bun Bang Fai Festival is not confined to Kalasin alone. Throughout the months of May and June, similar celebrations take place across the northeastern region, each with its own distinct flair and local traditions.
