BANGKOK, Thailand – The Cabinet has approved new electricity cost reduction measures to ease financial pressures on households amid rising energy prices. The program, set to run until April 2025, will provide a discount of 16.05 satang per unit for residential consumers using no more than 300 units per month. The Ministry of Energy and relevant agencies have been tasked with implementing the plan within legal and regulatory guidelines.

The subsidy will benefit residential consumers under the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). Households served by the Electricity Welfare Concession of the Royal Thai Navy will also be included.

Officials estimate that approximately 21.3 million households will receive support over the four-month period. The total budget for the program is projected at 1.7 billion baht, with an average of 425 million baht allocated per month. The relief plan follows a similar electricity subsidy that was in place from September to December 2024.

The Ministry of Energy has been instructed to ensure efficient program execution, coordinating with electricity providers to guarantee that eligible consumers receive the discount. (NNT)
