Cabinet extends emergency decree in Deep South until 19 Dec

BANGKOK, 13 September 2011 – The Cabinet has approved the extension of the emergency decree in the three southern border provinces for three more months or until 19 December 2011.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Anusorn Iamsa-ard indicated that the Cabinet had resolved during its weekly meeting to retain the Emergency Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situations within the three southernmost provinces, comprising Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, for another three months. As a consequence, the decree’s expiration date is adjourned from 20 September to 19 December.

In addition, the Cabinet assigned Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs Police General Kowit Wattana to pay a visit to the Deep South in order to follow up local residents’ reactions to the extended emergency decree. He is also required to brief the Cabinet on his findings upon his return.
