Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn is scheduled to visit Bangkok on February 23 for a two-day official visit to strengthen bilateral ties and establish new areas of cooperation between the two nations. This will be his first visit to Thailand since assuming his position as Cambodia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in 2016.
According to Cambodian officials, Prak is set to pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha during his visit at the invitation of his Thai counterpart Don Pramudwinai. The two foreign ministers will later hold bilateral meetings to discuss several topics concerning cooperation.
Both sides are also expected to table future projects to strengthen the “traditional friendship, good neighborliness, and close all-round cooperation” that has been “constantly deepened and expanded, reaching the level of ’Partners in Peace and Prosperity’.”
Top of the bilateral agenda will be the joint campaign against cross-border criminal gangs, focusing on scam call centers that have affected thousands of people in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.
In the lead-up to his visit, Prak Sokhonn held talks with Thailand’s ambassador to Cambodia, Cherdkiat Atthakorn, to discuss bilateral partnerships in trade and investment, education, demining, infrastructure and connectivity, including border crossings. The two sides agreed that more collaborative efforts are necessary to achieve the trade target of US$15 billion by 2025 and demining operations along their shared border.
Prak Sokhonn’s visit to Bangkok is expected to bolster the already-strong ties between the two neighboring countries and open up new opportunities for cooperation in various fields. (NNT)
