VIENTIANE – During the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits at the National Convention Center, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, October 10. In their discussion, Prime Minister Trudeau praised Thailand’s landmark legislation on marriage equality, which made Thailand the first ASEAN country to pass such a law.
Government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsap stated that Prime Minister Paetongtarn emphasized the potential for enhanced cooperation between Thailand and Canada, particularly in education and vocational training. She also expressed Thailand’s commitment to strengthening economic ties with Canada, with a focus on boosting trade and investment. Increasing direct flights between the two nations to promote travel and finalizing the ongoing ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations were also highlighted as priorities.
Prime Minister Trudeau lauded Thailand’s focus on human rights and legal progress, particularly the successful enactment of the marriage equality law. He affirmed Canada’s willingness to further collaborate with Thailand in education and other areas moving forward. (PRD)
