BANGKOK -The Excise Department will begin collecting carbon emission tax from owners of vehicles from January next year onward.
Permanent Secretary for Finance Somchai Sajjapongse has revealed that the carbon emission tax will be calculated from the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, instead of the engine capacity.
Mr. Somchai said he believed people would be more environmentally conscious after the new tax scheme is introduced, and that the new system would be fairer to taxpayers.

Commuters will be forced to attach a new eco-sticker, which displays emission information determined by international standards, on their vehicles.
The Ministry of Finance is also planning to work with the Ministry of Industry in a collaborative effort to have every vehicle’s carbon dioxide release levels checked.
