BANGKOK, 16 June 2015 – The Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) has said that rumors of the National Reform Council (NRC) striking down the draft constitution have not affected the committee’s work.
CDC spokesman Gen Lertrat Ratanavanich said it is commonplace for differing viewpoints to be expressed in a collaboration between several people. Each individual is entitled to his or her own opinion.
Gen Lertrat said it remains uncertain whether the NRC will pass the revised draft charter, adding that neither outcome would surprise him.
Regarding speculation that the reform body will strike down the draft charter, the CDC spokesman confirmed it would not bias the work of the committee.
The CDC will soon convene a meeting to discuss a possible revision of the 2014 interim constitution, in order to extend the committee’s term in office for another 30 days. The CDC believes it would allow its members to complete their mandate to draft a new constitution.
The spokesperson assured the public that the CDC will be able to complete the drafting of organic laws before the promulgation of the new constitution.
He declined to comment on the controversial issue pertaining to the extension of the prime minister’s term for another two years. However, Gen Lertrat expressed his personal belief that everyone has good intentions for this country and that no one wants to stay in power for too long, especially when peace and unity have been restored.
