CHAIYAPHUM, 4 February 2015 – The drought situation in the northeastern province of Chaiyaphum has not improved, as 10 districts in the northeastern province have been declared as disaster zones, provincial governor Vichein Chantaranotai.
The ten disaster-hit districts are Muang, Nong Bua Daeng, Khon Sawan, Bua Khao, Noen Sa-nga, Chatturat, Sap Yai, Nong Bua Rawe, Phakdi Chumphon and Kaeng Khro. Nine of these districts do not have sufficient water for agriculture but still have enough water for consumption.
However, people in Kaeng Khro are experiencing a shortage of drinking water as water from Lam Takhong Dam has yet to reach the district. As a result, tambon Tha Kham and tambon Na Nong Thung have shared their water supplies to mitigate the situation.
The provincial authority has sent water trucks and drinking water to people in drought-affected areas, as more groundwater is being pumped.
The Chaiyaphum governor insisted that off-season farming in the province is prohibited at this time because the amount of water is not sufficient.
