BANGKOK, 23 March 2011 (NNT) – Pheu Thai MPs Chairperson Police Captain Chalerm Yubamrung has tendered his resignation as MP while pledging that he will remain an active member of the opposition party.

According to Pol Capt Chalerm’s close aide and Pheu Thai MP for Si Sa Ket Thanet Kruarat, the outspoken chief MP had delegated his personal secretary to submit his resignation letter with the House Speaker this morning. He pointed out that Pol Capt Chalerm had already thought the matter through and had conferred with Pheu Thai influential figures in advance. However, whether or not he would be fielded in the next general election, Mr Thanet said he had no answer.

Yesterday, a group of 30 Pheu Thai MPs from northeastern provinces traveled to meet with Pol Capt Chalerm at his residence to inquire about his exit and to plead with him not to abandon the party. The MPs Chairperson reportedly admitted that he was disappointed by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s support for party-list MP Mingkwan Saengsuwan to lead the party and to contest the upcoming general election. He was also upset with the party’s war room monitoring the recent censure debate after his speech was cut short to allow Mr Mingkwan to embellish his performance with more details.

Nonetheless, Pol Capt Chalerm remains a member of Pheu Thai and has confirmed that he will continue to contribute to his party, especially in election campaigns.
