BANGKOK, 21 September 2012 – The Chao Phraya dam has discharged more water due to heavy rains, raising the water level in the Chao Phraya river by 10 centimeters. Nearby roads and communities have started to be submerged again.
The Mayor of Tambon Bang Ban in Ayutthaya said heavy rains in the northern and central regions had prompted the Chao Phraya dam to discharge 100 cubic meters of water more than usual per second. At present, the dam is discharging water at a rate of 1,740 cubic meters a second, causing the Chao Phraya river to rise. Before this, the flood level in the province had been stable at less than one meter and lowered to almost 30 centimeters.
Six districts have been affected by the flooding situation in Ayutthaya. More than 20,000 households and 1,700 rai of farmland have been submerged.
