BANGKOK, 18 March 2011 (NNT) – Secretary to the Foreign Minister Chavanond Intarakomalyasut has distributed necessities and medicines to disaster victims in Japan while a trip back home is being arranged for Thai nationals.

Accompanied by a medical team from the Public Health Ministry, Mr Chavanond paid a visit to Thai citizens in the Japanese cities of Mito and Oarai in Ibaraki Prefecture, where up to 4,000 Thais live. The two towns have sustained serious damages after being hit by the recent earthquake and tsunami disaster and are still faced with a blackout in some areas.

On this occasion, Mr Chavanond gave out relief supplies, such as drinking water, blankets and medicines, to the victims while the medical staff provided them with health check-ups. As for Thai people who have expressed their intention to return to Thailand but are experiencing passport problems, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will assist them at haste.

Mr Chavanond had an opportunity to converse with Thai people in Mito about their living conditions as well as any additional help they might need. However, none of them wished to leave the quake-hit country due to their worries over the safety of their properties. The Secretary to the Foreign Minister thus advised them to register with the Thai embassy in Tokyo in order to facilitate contacts with the Thai government in case further assistance is needed.
