Chiang Mai has enough water for the dry season

The Director of The Royal Irrigation Department in Chiang Mai reported on the status of Chiang Mai’s two major dams, noting that while capacity was at 20 percent at Mae Ngad and under 12 percent at Mae Kuang, he was confident that there was enough water to supply Chiang Mai residents through May.

The Director, Jamesak Limpithi, said that Mae-Nagd has 55.44 million cubic meters out of the maximum capacity of 265 million cubic meters; that it is at 20.92% capacity and that of that only 45.44 million cubic meters are of use. Mae Kuang currently has 30.32 million cubic meters out of  the maximum capacity of 263 million cubic meters and only 16.32 million cubic meters is of use.

He said that to mitigate severe drought in some areas water is being transported to supply people with water. Additionally new measures have been put in place to reduce water usage in agricultural areas including Doi Loh, San Kamphaeng, Phrao, San Sai, Sanpatong and Mae Rim. Also more than 100 projects have been conducted to encourage farmers to plants crops that consume less water.

At present, water transferred from the Mae Ngad Dam is at 0.230 million cubic meters per day, and 0.035 million cubic meters from Mae Kuang.. The Irrigation Department confirms that Chiang Mai residents will have enough water to consume and use through May.
