Chiang Mai hit by another cold snap

CHIANG MAI, 10 January 2013 Chiang Mai province is hit by another cold snap, with thick fog shrouding large areas of the province. 

According to the Northern Meteorological office, Chiang Mai municipality has been covered with fog, reducing visibility on major roads. The average temperature has also dropped by 2-4 degrees Celsius. And due to the extremely cold weather on mountain tops, isolated frost can be found in the areas.

The office also made known that Chiang Mai has declared two additional districts as disaster zones, raising the number of such zones to 18. Over 200,000 residents have been affected by the cold spell.

Nearly 30,000 blankets and winter gear have been handed out to locals while provincial authorities are asking for an additional budget of 42 million baht to secure more winter gear to meet the growing demand.
