Chiang Mai has seen around 85 small earthquakes since 2014 according to the Chief of Strategy and Management Section, Chiang Mai Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office Thana Nuaplod.
IN 2014 four districts had eleven earthquakes including Sansai, Mae Wang, Doi Saket and Chiang Dao. The number of earthquakes escalated in 2015 with 22 earthquakes in nine districts including Phrao, Mae Wang, Wieng Heng, Mae Jam, Doi Saket, Samoeng, and Chiang Dao. The province saw 39 earthquakes in 2016 in 11 districts including Phrao, Sansai, Mae Wang, Fang, Doi Sket, Samoeng, Hod, Chaiprakan, Jomthong, Doi Lor, and Chiang Dao. The first month of 2017 has already seen earthquakes in Chomthong, Mae Wang, Doi Lor, Sansai, Mae Chaem, Phrao, Doi Saket, and Chiang Dao. Most of the quakes were very small and hardly noticeable, ranging from 1 on the Richter scale to 4 and was due to the release of energy along the Mae Ta fault that runs from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai.
Most of the earthquakes took place in Chomthong and Mae Wang and the Governor ordered organizations to provide locals with information on the earthquakes and to hold earthquake preparedness drills this year.
