CHIANG MAI – The northern province of Chiang Mai has hosted a National Elders’ Day event to honor senior citizens.
Governor of Chiang Mai Pawin Chamniprasart officiated at the opening ceremony of the National Day of the Elderly event which took place at Chiang Mai University. More than 1,000 senior people from 25 districts took part in the activity. The governor took the opportunity to honor the older persons most of whom are in good health.
Other activities featured at the event included a smile makeover contest, the traditional “Rot Nam Dam Hua” ceremony where younger persons pour water onto the hands of the elderly as a symbol of respect. Traditional dances performed by the elderly, free haircuts, and health checkups were all part of the enjoyable day.
National Elders’ Day is celebrated on April 13th of every year which is also the first day of the annual Songkran Festival. The occasion provides an opportunity for youngsters to pay respect and show appreciation to older persons in their family.
