Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport has reopened following the removal of a Nok Air aircraft from its runway.
According to Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob, Airports of Thailand (AOT) and the Department of Airports (DOA) have performed a safety check and removed all foreign object debris from the runway where a Nok Air’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft skidded off while attempting a night landing on July 30, causing flight cancellations and the closure of the airport.
A separate inspection of the runway was carried out on Thursday (Aug 4) by officials from the Thai Civil Aviation Authority. Director of Chiang Rai Airport Sqn Ldr Somchanok Tiamtiabrat stated that the process of removing the stranded aircraft from the runway, which was done according to the International Civil Aviation Organization’s aircraft removal standards, had to be carefully conducted to prevent further damage to the vehicle’s landing gears and prevent rescue personnel from sustaining injuries, subsequently leading to the delayed opening of the airport.
Nok Air chief executive Wutthiphum Jurangkool said earlier that the airline would compensate all passengers on the flight through refunds and free tickets. (NNT)
