Bangkok – The construction of the Bueng Nong Bon Lake drainage tunnel is expected to be completed in 2021 and will help mitigate flooding in four districts of Bangkok.
Deputy Bangkok Governor Jakkapan Phiewngam recently viewed the progress of the tunnel in Bang Na district and said that construction is currently 35% complete without any persisting obstacles.
He said the Department of Drainage and Sewerage and the contractors have been ordered to speed up the construction, which is expected to be completed by next year.
The tunnel, which is five meters in diameter and located 30 meters under the ground, will span from the water intake building at Bueng Nong Bon lake through Khlong Nong Bon canal, to a pumping station pushing the water out to Chao Phraya River at Khlong Bang Or canal mouth. The project includes the construction of seven more water intake shafts and holding areas for water from canals to the tunnel.
The infrastructure is expected to help prevent and mitigate flooding in Prawet, Suan Luang, Phra Khanong, and Bang Na districts of Bangkok.
