BANGKOK, 11 March 2015 – In its latest bid to reduce the number of road casualties, the Consumer Protection Board (CPB) is preparing to tighten safety rules and regulations for motorcyclists and pillion passengers.

The Consumer Protection Board is planning to push ahead with the issuance of safety precaution labels for motorcycles to remind motorcyclists and passengers to wear helmets before taking a ride. The labels must be placed in the most visible position.

The CPB will in addition propose to ban children under the age of six from riding pillion, and children aged below 15 from driving a motorcycle. The idea has been initiated in response to recent statistics, which indicated a growing number of motorcycle casualties among youth.

According to statistics, dozing off while riding on a pillion is the main cause of motorcycle accidents among passengers of young age. Around 10 percent of the accidents are fatal.
