BANGKOK, 13 December 2013 The Department of Customs has seized luxury cars and contraband goods that had evaded more than 150 million baht in taxes.

The agency made known that undeclared goods including sports cars, ivory products, Siamese rosewood logs and cosmetics products were confiscated at Laem Chabang port.

The department has launched a widespread crackdown on illegal merchandises with over 30 separate raids staged since the beginning of November. Authorities reported that the rise in goods-smuggling coincides with the festive period at year-end.

Plans have been made to charge smugglers in a massive sweep during December and January when the biggest number of tax evasion cases is reported.
