DDPM urgently providing help for refugees affeced by recent fire

BANGKOK, 28 March 2013 The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) will construct a temporary shelter under a joint effort with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to help refugees affected by the camp inferno in Mae Hong Son province. 

According to DDPM Director General Chatchai Promlert, the DDPM’s provincial offices in Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok, Lampang and Chiang Rai have been instructed to accelerate assistance for the refugees until the situation returns to normal.

Drinking water, electricity generators, tents and other necessities have been sent to the site in Khun Yuam district. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and NGOs have also been joining the DDPM in the construction of the temporary shelter.

Mr. Chatchai added later the Department of Provincial Administration will lay down rules to prevent similar incident inside the refugee camp. Fire drills will be held regularly while fire extinguishers are expected to be installed around the area where they will be easily accessible.
