BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai provided an update on the release of four Thai fishermen held in Myanmar, March 28. The delay in their release was attributed to the case entering the legal system, despite previous agreements for their release. Phumtham confirmed that the Thai military and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had been working closely to resolve the issue at all levels, including coordination with the Thai military attaché in Yangon and ongoing discussions between high-ranking military officials from both nations.

He explained that the initial understanding was that the issue would be resolved through local border committees, but the fishermen were inadvertently processed into the legal system. This added complexity to the situation, requiring a more lengthy legal process. Despite this, Phumtham expressed confidence that a pardon would be granted, and the fishermen would be released soon. He also noted that if the fishermen commit any offenses in the future, their previous charges would be added to the new ones.

The release is expected to occur soon, although Phumtham acknowledged there might be slight discrepancies in timing. (TNA)
