The government’s proposed rollout of a digital wallet campaign with a 10,000 baht per person allowance has yet to reach its conclusion, with some critics pointing out the campaign’s similarity to the 1999 campaign in Japan.
Deputy Minister of Finance Julapun Amornvivat has dismissed a claim that the government is trying to imitate Japan’s shopping coupon program from 1999 with its proposed digital wallet rollout, after some critics pointed to the similarity between the two.
Mr. Julapun said he believes all sides would understand that these projects are not comparable, given the different contexts of both countries.
The government has yet to announce the official rollout date for the digital wallet, with the current expectation set for February next year. Mr. Julapun said the government still maintains its current target, however, the timeframe could shift if things are not ready. (NNT)
