BANGKOK, 9 May 2013 The deputy prime minister in charge of security has come out with a strong rejection the 5-point demand from the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) independent group.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Ubumrung, as Director of the Center for the Committee on the Mobilization of Southern Border Provinces Policy and Strategies, on Thursday, talked about an analysis on Thailand’s peace process with the BRN, which will be presented to the committee meeting on Friday.

Mr. Chalerm commented that the 5-point demand, which the group has revealed through its video clip broadcast on public domain, has not been in line with the conditions of the process.

The Deputy PM said that the BRN’s action appeared to be a move to escalate the peace talks to an international level while giving an impression that the process is not going to lead to peace and the public safety is being held hostage.

In short, Mr. Chalerm stated that Thailand should never compromise and take such an offer as he believes doing so will not help curb violent attacks in the restive southern border region.

He added that the talks should be somewhat adjusted and a less publicized discussion by sub-committees may be a more effective approach to help restore peace in the Deep South.
