BANGKOK, 12 March 2013 The Deputy Prime Minister in charge of security is ready to travel to neighboring Malaysia to get more advice on how to deal with years-long Deep South insurgency.
Deputy PM Chalerm Ubumrung said on Monday that he will travel to Langkawi island group in Malaysia on March 28 to meet with Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, the former Malaysian Prime Minister.
Mr. Chalerm said the upcoming trip is intended for him to have a discussion on solutions to the problems of insurgent unrest in Thailand’s southern border region.
While refusing to reveal more about the details of his trip, the DPM insisted that the Thai government’s approach towards the years-long problems has been on the right path, particularly the National Security Council’s recent signing of a peace deal with the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) group.
He stated that the deal signing was also seen as a manifestation of both Thailand’s and Malaysia’s stance to deny unrest instigators any refuge as well as a success of cross-border collaboration against insurgent violence.
Mr. Chalerm added that he will also spend some time in the Deep South to collect more data on how to deal with the unrest during his trip to Malaysia.
