LAMPANG, 27 March 2014 Thousands of corn fields on the northern province of Lampang have been hit with severe drought.

According to Boonsong Chuakiew, a mayor of Banmai Subdistrict, more than 10,000 rais of corn fields were plagued by drought and around 500 households faced problems of water shortages. He added that the Wang River at Wang Nuea District has been running dry for days and was unable to supply enough water for the nearby corn fields.

The level of water in the Wang River is so low to the point where electrical water pumps are unable to function properly. Meanwhile, a large number of farmers on the upstream have been making some sand barriers in order to trap water from the river into a certain area to be used for storage. For this reason, it has been depleting the amount of water in Wang Nuea District.

Moreover, in order to resolve the problem of water shortages, the provincial municipality have been dredging certain areas of land to let water from the river flow more clearly.
