NONTHABURI, Thailand – A drunk man driving a pickup truck in the wrong lane crashed into a motorcycle, killing two 14-year-old girls instantly on Bang Kruai-Sai Noi Road, Bang Bua Thong district, early morning on Oct 5.
The accident occurred around 5 AM near a residential area in Bang Bua Thong. The victims, both 14, were riding a blue-black motorcycle when they were struck head-on by a white pickup truck driven by 35-year-old Sitthichai. The motorcycle was severely damaged, and the girls were pronounced dead at the scene.
Sitthichai, who had been driving against traffic, told police he couldn’t remember how the crash happened. He admitted to having consumed two bottles of beer and mentioned that he had not rested for two days after working at a mall on Ratchaphruek Road. He was unsure if he fell asleep behind the wheel, but he was found parked in the wrong lane with his truck heavily damaged.
Noppadol, an 18-year-old friend of the victims, explained that the girls were riding home from Sai Noi to Bang Bua Thong when they ran out of gas. He had been helping them push the motorcycle when they stopped at a fuel station. As they continued riding together, Noppadol saw the pickup truck speeding against traffic and yelled at the girls to be careful. He managed to swerve out of the way in time, but the two girls couldn’t avoid the collision and were hit by the truck.
Noppadol also claimed that after the crash, he overheard the driver blaming the girls for driving against traffic. Despite the driver denying he said this, Noppadol was certain about what he heard.
Police measured Sitthichai’s blood alcohol level at 119 mg%, far above the legal limit. He has been taken into custody for further legal action. (TNA)
