BANGKOK, 30 July 2012 – The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has announced that it will treat the chemical waste disposal in Chachoengsao as a special and urgent case. The DSI said it believed there was a connection between this case and earlier cases of illegal chemical waste dumping in the neighboring Samut Prakarn and Chon Buri provinces.
The DSI has found that the suspected area in Chachoengsao was full of ponds containing chemicals and high piles of toxic barrels. DSI investigators speculated that the chemicals were illegally disposed of there. They will travel to the area to collect evidence on Tuesday.
The DSI suspects that a certain group of people is responsible for the illegal chemical waste disposal in the three provinces, and that the waste might be from many industrial plants. The department has vowed to urgently investigate the case due to fears of contamination to the environment.
