Bangkok – Dusit Zoo is inviting visitors to attend a meet and greet event for its Aldabra giant tortoises on May Day.
Dusit Zoo has four female Aldabra giant tortoises in its care. They are on display in the reptiles and amphibians zone. An activity will be held on 1st May to introduce zoo-goers to the exotic shelled-creatures throughout the day. Admission is free for any visitors born on 1st May.
The Aldabra giant tortoise is the world’s second largest tortoise after the Galapagos giant tortoise, with an average weight of 150-250 kilograms. Its carapace averages 90-120 centimeters. The females are generally smaller than males.
Native to the Aldabra Islands in the Indian Ocean, the Aldabra giant tortoise is also one of the world’s longest living animals. Some individual Aldabra giant tortoises live longer than 200 years.
With its population shrinking to 699 across the globe, the Aldabra giant tortoise’s current conservation status by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (INUC) is vulnerable to extinction.
