BANGKOK, 20 April 2014 – Chairman of the Election Commission (EC) Supachai Somcharoen has expressed his confidence that the EC and political parties will be able to come up with solutions to problems of the new election and set the poll date during their meeting this week.
Mr Supachai on Sunday spoke about the EC’s meeting with political parties on 22 April, saying he had learnt that the government-led Pheu Thai party wanted the EC to organize the election on 15 June this year. He said the EC would consider whether it was possible for the poll to be held then but it would listen to other political parties to see if they agreed with Pheu Thai.
The EC chairman added that he believed there would not be violent clashes between pro- and anti-government protest groups, saying some conclusions and agreements would be reached in the 22 April meeting. They would help prevent the political situation from turning more violent, he said.
