BANGKOK, 4 January 2014 The Election Commission (EC) has indicated that the success of a general election depends on talks between political parties and warned that the 30 March Senate election might be in trouble if the political situation is still disquieting.

On 4 February 2014, the EC called a meeting between provincial election directors on re-elections for MPs. Election Commissioner Somchai Srisuthiyakorn said the EC had carried off the 2 February poll and called on politicians to find solutions to the ongoing political impasse together otherwise the country would never have a successful election.

The EC’s major challenges included elections for the constituencies with only one candidate and those without a candidate, advance polls which had been nullified and disruptions to the 2 February election. The EC also had to organize the senate election in March this year and local polls in some provinces, Mr Somchai said.
