BANGKOK, 24 June 2015 – The Election Commission is compiling a list of eligible voters living overseas in a bid to prepare for a new round of elections in August of next year.
The government announced earlier this month that if the draft of the constitution is approved by the National Reform Council (NRC) and undergoes a referendum, the election is expected to be held in August.
Election Commissioner Somchai Srisuthiyakorn has held talks with related agencies concerning online overseas voter registration. The new registration system is expected to reduce the time and cost taken to register and to allow voters to easily check their names and history.
It is agreed that the list of voters needs to be updated in order to prevent ghost votes from being cast. Around 4 million baht of budget has been set aside to implement the new system. It is expected to be ready for trial this November.
