BANGKOK, 14 March 2014  The Election Commission indicated on Thursday it expects the senatorial election to proceed smoothly on March 30, although it has prepared contingency plans to deal with unforeseen obstacles to the poll.

According to EC chairman Supphachai Somcharoen, he does not think there will be obstructions to the election of senators, unlike the circumstances during the general election. A 75% voters turnout is expected.

EC secretary-general Phuchong Nuttrawong, meanwhile, indicated the EC was asking the police to increase the number of officers deployed to ensure order at polling stations to 200,000, although it was not worried over violent incidents occurring during the poll.

Voters can currently register with election officials to cast their ballots in the early election on March 23 instead of on the main polling date.
