An elderly Chinese woman died after being pulled out to sea and drowning off Jomtien Beach.
Paramedics arrived at the scene opposite Jomtien Beach Road Soi 5 to find the body of Zhan Xiaojun, 72, on the sand and her husband grieving over her.
Zhan showed not outwardly signs of injury that would have led to her death.
Tour guide Jarunee Leepattarakul, 33, said she had taken the Zhans and others in her group to Jomtien for a stroll and the couple went swimming. The husband returned to shore alone and noticed about three minutes later that his wife had been pulled by the current far out to sea.
She never made it back to shore alive. Beachgoers provided CPR, but it was no use.
Police could only speculate as to the cause of her drowning.
Beach vendors claimed several people have died on the same stretch of beach over the past year and said more warning signs or life guards are needed.
