BANGKOK, 26 January 2014 About 440,000 eligible voters in 83 election districts out of a total of 375 districts were unable to exercise their voting rights, said Election Commissioner Mr. Somchai Srisutthiyakorn.

According to Somchai, the February 2 elections will likely face the same problems, including disorder and violence, adding that it will be very difficult to conduct the election and that a new election date should be set.

Mr. Somchai insisted that the February 2 election would not be a way out for the Thai society, given its inevitable lack of quorum would not allow parliament to reopen or a new government to be established. He asked where the 125 party list MPs would come from when national elections could not take place, adding that the Election Commission and the government would hold a meeting to set a new election date as soon as possible because the longer the elections were delayed, the more it would cost the country in terms of election budget– to the tune of 350 million Baht per day.
