BANGKOK, Jan 1 – Thailand’s Election Commission (EC) today rejected a request to extend registration for constituency MP candidates for the February 2 general election.

But Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, EC member for election administration, said the EC will meet later today to discuss  the proposal.

Several political parties including the Pheu Thai petitioned the EC, calling for an extension of the registration period which ends today in light of disruption in several constituencies in Thailand’s South.

The letter said potential candidates who filed complaints with the police after their registrations were incomplete should be automatically registered to run in the election.

They called on the EC to extend the registration deadline and take action against those obstructing the registration process.
