Bangkok – The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities is exhibiting a lightweight cardboard chair which can be made at home for just 400 baht as an innovation for young persons with disabilities.

The cardboard chair was initiated by Baan Fueng Fa Home for Protection and Development of Persons with Disabilities in Nonthaburi, to assist children with multiple disabilities or bed-ridden children who can’t move by themselves. The chair can be designed to suit the physical conditions of an individual child needing to sit up comfortably. Construction advice to those who may be interested in making the cardboard chair will be available soon.

Anira Thinon, a deputy director general of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, said the cardboard chair won an award for outstanding innovation in government service from the Office of the Public Sector Development Commission. The department will gladly transfer the instructions on how to make the cardboard chair to those who may be interested or parents of children with disabilities, to save on the purchase cost of one, and promote the re-use of cardboard boxes.

The manufacturing cost for the cardboard chair is only a few hundred baht per unit. The chair weighs only a few kilograms, has a belt attached to it and can help with the physical development of the child.
