CHANTHABURI, Thailand – The Department of Highways has completed the expansion of Highway 317, from Chanthaburi to Sa Kaeo, increasing it to four lanes, October 22. The first section, from Soi Dao District to Ban Khao Laem, covers over 16 kilometers with a budget of 896 million baht. The expansion aims to strengthen infrastructure and stimulate economic and trade relations between Thailand and Cambodia.
The upgraded section, stretching from kilometer 65+350 to 82+000, improves connectivity between Thailand’s eastern and northeastern regions while linking to Cambodia, which shares rich cultural heritage with Thailand. The highway plays a vital role in the transport of agricultural goods, tourism, and manufacturing industries. It is also a major route for travelers during festivals, providing access to cultural and natural attractions, ultimately promoting long-term economic growth in local communities.
The highway has been expanded from two lanes to four lanes (two lanes in each direction), with a 3.5-meter wide asphalt surface per lane. The outer shoulders are 2.5 meters wide, with concrete barriers separating traffic. In community areas, the road widens to 10 lanes (five lanes in each direction), including main lanes, side lanes, and sidewalks. The project also includes the construction of six twin bridges, U-turn points, street lighting, and 21 roadside pavilions, enhancing safety with additional traffic signs and signals.
The completion of this project enhances traffic capacity, reduces travel time, improves safety, and contributes to regional social and economic development, providing a significant boost to the quality of life for the local population.
