BANGKOK, July 7, 2012 – Dr. Pipat Yingseri, secretary-general of the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says the government has a policy to encourage greater use of generic drugs. The use of generic medication will help citizens to reduce their medical expenses and have greater access to necessary medications.

The FDA says it has appointed researchers to study the efficacy of new generic drugs. Research was undertaken both by the Thai FDA and institutions overseas. A meeting was also held to ensure understanding among importers, producers, and research centers throughout the country.

New generic medications from abroad are allowed to be imported but must have the same active ingredients, size, and potency as the prototype drugs and be registered according to Thai FDA guidelines.
