BANGKOK, July 2015 – The Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are expected to enforce stricter control of medicines to prevent their abuse.

The ONCB, the FDA, Bang Pakok Wittayakom School, the Office of Basic Education Commission (OBEC) and the Thai Pharmacies Association have revealed at a press conference their efforts in trying to stop medicinal abuse.

ONCB Secretary General Permpong Choawalit said following the viral video of a high school girl having a seizure after taking 40 painkiller pills that it is now a trend among secondary school students.

He said a combination of painkillers and other drugs would make anyone taking them high. Better controls on the medicines often prescribed to younger people will be implemented. Certain types of drugs will soon only be sold in an FDA certified drug store.

The Royal Thai Police and the FDA will continue to monitor drug stores nationwide to make sure painkillers are not sold for a misguided purpose. The stores could risk having their license suspended for 120 days.
