A fire broke out on Saturday (June 22) night at an old half-concrete, half-wooden house previously owned by former Prime Minister Gen Chatichai Choonhavan, now occupied by Tisana Choonhavan, a Move Forward Party (MFP) MP for Bangkok. The fire, believed to have been caused by a short circuit, damaged about half of the house.

The house, one of several on an 8-rai plot of land in Phaya Thai district, was inherited by Kraisak Choonhavan, Gen Chatichai’s son and a former deputy leader of the Democrat Party. At the time of the fire, Tisana and her younger sister were not at home. The fire started around 9.30 p.m. and was extinguished in less than half an hour, aided by water from a nearby pond.

Tisana, working in a nearby house, noticed smoke and heard a loud explosion before flames engulfed the second floor. She began a live broadcast on social media during the fire, which drew visits from relatives, including former foreign minister Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara, former digital economy and society minister Buddhipongse Punnakanta, and MFP list-MP Rangsiman Rome.

The electrical wiring in the house was reportedly five to six decades old. Police are continuing to investigate the incident, with an initial assumption that it was caused by a short circuit. (NNT)
