First international ‘Lahu’ New Year ceremony held at Payap University in Chiang Mai

A highlight of the ceremony was the “Jakue” dance performance, a traditional Lahu recreational activity, presented by representatives from all seven participating countries to welcome the Prime Minister.

The 1st International Lahu New Year cultural preservation ceremony was held at Payap University in the capital district of Chiang Mai Province.

The event, inaugurated by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, witnessed the participation of over 5,000 people from seven Lahu ethnic groups from countries including the United States, China, Australia, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand.



A highlight of the ceremony was the “Jakue” dance performance, a traditional Lahu recreational activity, presented by representatives from all seven participating countries to welcome the Prime Minister. In a show of support, the Prime Minister purchased and immediately donned a traditional Lahu tribe shirt for the occasion.

Prime Minister Srettha commended the unity and love among the globally dispersed Lahu community, urging them to remain united.



He stated that the Thai government is committed to equally supporting the perpetuation of culture and arts of all ethnic groups in Thailand, ensuring equitable opportunities and fairness for everyone in obtaining nationality.

This commitment extends to providing access to fundamental rights such as education, public health, and other rights.



On this occasion, the Prime Minister received traditional Lahu gifts, including a shoulder bag and shirt. He participated in a Lahu ceremony offering blessings from elders.

The Prime Minister also joined in the New Year dance celebration and toured an exhibition showcasing the Lahu tribe’s lifestyle. (NNT)
