BANGKOK– The center for road accident prevention and reduction of New Year holidays has urged agencies to inspect drivers more frequently, to prevent road accidents.
The center for road accident prevention and reduction run by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has revealed that the number of accidents during 29 December 2015 – 2 January 2016 was recorded at 2,753 cases, with 292 fatalities and 2,855 injuries.
In wake of the incidents, the center is now calling upon provincial agencies to prioritize traffic management on main roads along with strict regulations on traffic rules and obedience to the law, especially for overspeeding and drunk driving.
Authorities have been appointed to carry out more frequent inspections for suspicious looking vehicles, place more checkpoints, and regulate drivers’ behavior for the safety of the public.
On this matter, the DDPM Director-General Chatchai Promlert has said that the number of accidents during in the past five days is considered high, thus safety measures must still be carried out in an attempt to prevent more accidents from happening.
Many of the general public are travelling back to Bangkok today, with various reports of speeding despite traffic congestion, thus causing a risk for accidents. The road safety center is now working to ensure travelers’ safety for the Bangkok-bound commute, with facilitation and assistance duties intensified.
