CHIANG MAI, Thailand – Two popular waterfalls in Chiang Mai’s Mae Rim district have been temporarily closed due to flash flooding triggered by heavy overnight rainfall. Doi Suthep-Pui National Park announced the closure of Mae Sa and Tat Mok waterfalls for public safety, with the closures to remain in effect until conditions improve.
The downpours also caused the Wang Hai weir in Chiang Dao district to collapse, resulting in severe flooding in nearby villages. Local officials, along with army and border patrol units, have since inspected the site to assess the damage caused by the breach.
Flooding has spread across several districts, including Phrao, Samoeng, Chom Thong, and the capital district. Northern runoff flowing into the Ping River has raised concerns about potential flooding in downtown Chiang Mai, leading local authorities to closely monitor the situation.
In response, the provincial irrigation office and other state agencies have established a monitoring center. Officials are prepared to open sluice gates along the Ping River to release water if needed as efforts to manage the impact of the flooding continue. (NNT)
