NONG KHAI, Thailand – A government team led by Prime Minister’s Office Minister Jiraporn Sinthuprai and Deputy Minister of Finance Julapun Amornvivat visited flood-affected areas in Nong Khai and Bueng Kan provinces on Sep 21 to monitor the situation and provide relief to affected citizens. The tour began at Yod Kaew Temple in Wiang Khuk subdistrict, where the two ministers distributed essential supplies collected through donation points. The team also visited a damaged primary school and a disaster relief center in Tha Bo district.

The flooding in Nong Khai province began on September 11 when the Mekong River overflowed, impacting six districts and over 7,000 households. Agricultural areas were also affected. Although the water levels have started to recede, some areas remain submerged. Local authorities, military units, and various agencies have since mobilized to provide relief and assess the damage.

As of September 21, the Mekong River’s water level in Nong Khai has dropped to 10.19 meters, nearly 2 meters below the critical level, following a decrease of 72 cm from the previous day. While most areas impacted by the Mekong’s overflow have seen improvements, other regions remain flooded due to water from tributaries and streams. Floodgates have been opened, and water pumps installed to assist with drainage efforts.

Authorities continue to warn residents to stay vigilant as heavy rains remain a concern. The province has issued flood alerts and is closely monitoring the situation, especially in areas such as Ban Duea subdistrict, where the water level remains 2 meters high. Local relief operations are ongoing to support those still dealing with the aftermath of the floods. (NNT)
