Flooding in southern region began to recede

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, Nov 25 – The situation in Nakhon Si Thammarat returned to normal after several days of flooding. The province had earlier declared its 22 districts as flood-prone disaster areas.

About 141,800 residents and 9,000 rai of farmland were hit by floodwaters, while 20 bridges and 570 roads were damaged.

In Phatthalung, flooding in six districts also began to recede but 12 schools remained close due to water remaining in school buildings.

In Surat Thani, monks and local residents helped one another clean the base of the Phra Borommathat Chaiya temple after flood water was been drained from the compound. As the temple was damaged amid fears that the stupa could not be cleaned, fine arts officials will be asked to examine the damage and start restoration work.

In nearby Trang, provincial disaster prevention and mitigation official Amnuay Chantharat said floods have receded in three out of six districts. Some areas are still under up to one metre deep of floodwaters, while the Trang-Thungsong road remained impassable. Three schools are still closed.

However flood situation is Trang is expected to return normal soon as it has stopped raining for three consecutive days.

In Songkhla province, residents living along Songkhla Lake in five districts, including the provincial seat, Kuan Kanoon, Khai Chaison, Bang Kaew and Pak Payoon, are still have about 80-80 centimetres of standing water.

The water supply system in affected villages cannot be used, and residents are still waiting for flood-relief packages.
